You Must Be Joking

I wake up on my side in the roots of a large tree. Party aromas drifting on the warm night air and music flattened by distance tell me it is still Halloween at the Academy.

The earth smells good; rich and woody, overlaid with the iron tang of nearby water. Through the trees a lake shines, surrounding the moonlit island like a thick ring of silver. The stars are in a different position to the last time I saw them, so a couple of hours have passed since…

I can’t be Gavin; he was standing there talking to me. The whole point of a traditional werewolf transformation is that it’s one person in a different state, not separate individuals who can speak to each other. I don’t even remember when the moon was full over the last ten years.

Admittedly, I sometimes get more tired than usual and go to sleep early, alone.

Roughly once a month in an Orchard property, where I won’t be disturbed.

Above a convenient hyperspace chamber.

I always thought the reason for my strength was to deal with constant pressure, but I must be close to breaking if Gavin can convince me of something so ridiculous. Perhaps the Beanstalk will be my last launch.

And yet, I am a werewolf with impeccable taste and manners, living in twenty first century England. Does the concept of absurdity even exist anymore?

A block of light illuminates the lower canopy of a tree.

“Gig?”

Helen’s voice echoes out of the stairway beneath a hatch.

“Gig, are you all right?”

She steps up and out of the light, becoming a sleek shadow. I raise a hand; she turns and sees me.

“I had to go through the security footage to find you,” she says.

“Sorry,” I mumble.

“Don’t be; it was worth it to see you jump from the shore to the island.”

The harsh, artificial light disappears as Helen shuts the door. She picks her way in high heels across the loamy soil and sits with her hip against my shoulder.

“This is the first time you’re not the life and soul of the party, Gig,” she says. “Don’t go getting old on us. The economy is relying on your continued existence.”

I want to tell Helen everything, but only manage a grunt as tears blur my view of her.

“Becky came back,” Helen says. “She was boggle-eyed with rage because you hadn’t gone and found her. I had to get Royal Protection to keep that princess on the other side of the park in case… God, can you imagine?” She laughs. “What a nightmare Becky is.”

“Helen rather loves Becky, underneath it all,” Gavin says.

I jump up so fast Helen screams and falls backwards.

Gavin stands under a tree four metres away, his face in shadow.

“Gig!” Helen shouts.

“It’s all right, Helen,” I say, my voice pitched high with tension.

“Gig, what is it?” Helen says.

“Over there,” I say and point at Gavin.

Helen shakes as she turns to face the darkness under the trees.

“What?” she says.

She is looking right at Gavin.

I try to speak; can’t.

“Shall I come further into the light?” Gavin says.
